Unit 4.1:  Chemical Nomenclature

All chemical changes are chemical reactions.  All chemical changes involve the breaking of chemical bonds, the re-arrangement of atoms, and the forming of new chemical bonds.  This makes the types of chemical bonds one of the major focal points of chemistry.  This unit studies the nomenclature and formulas associated with ionic bonding and the nomenclature and formulas associated with covalent bonding.

TEKS:

C.7 The student knows how atoms form ionic, metallic, and covalent bonds. The student is expected to:

C.7A  name ionic compounds containing main group or transition metals and covalent compounds using International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) nomenclature rules

C.7B   write the chemical formulas of common polyatomic ions, ionic compounds containing main group or transition metals, and covalent compounds

C.7C   construct electron dot formulas to illustrate ionic and covalent bonds
